In Northern Thailand, a known source area of sex trafficking, three things put children at high risk: poverty, low levels of education, and social marginalization.
- Families in Northern Thailand survive on less than $2 per person per day. This causes children to drop out of school, putting them at risk of being trafficked and exploited.
- An estimated 9% of internet-using children were victims of online sexual exploitation and abuse. Scaled to the population, this represents an estimated 400,000 children.
- Over 220,000 people are estimated to be held in Thailand’s neighboring countries, forced to carry out online scams, facing horrific violence and threats to their lives.
According to a recent UNICEF report, an estimated 9% of internet-using children aged 12–17 in Thailand were victims of grave instances of online sexual exploitation and abuse. Scaled to the population, this represents an estimated 400,000 children.
Another Growing Threat:
Trafficking into cyber scam operations – Recent estimates show that at least 120,000 people in Myanmar and at least 100,000 in Cambodia may be held in situations where they are forced to carry out online scams.
