In Northern Thailand, children like Nuan* face a quiet, ordinary crisis. When families live day to day, school fees quickly become unaffordable. And when children stop going to school, the risks multiply: exploitative work, trafficking disguised as opportunity, forced criminality, and more.
The Freedom Story exists to intervene when children are most vulnerable, stopping harm before it ever occurs.
800,000 children drop out of school each year in Thailand. In 2025, we helped more than 400 students stay in school through our Freedom Chapter scholarship program. For each of them, a monthly scholarship is more than tuition; it’s protection, support, training, and the chance to rewrite their futures. Our scholarship program addresses the root causes of vulnerability by restoring support systems that keep kids safe at home, at school, and in their villages.
Nuan* is one of those students:
“Before I became a scholarship student, I lived in a little bamboo house up high on a mountain. Most people in my village just work day to day to earn a little money, so my parents couldn’t afford my school fees. I couldn’t study anymore.
Since I got the scholarship, my life is so much better. The money helped me go back to school, which completely changed my life.
But the amazing thing is that The Freedom Story didn’t just help me — it helped my whole family and my village. They taught my parents how to farm better to make extra money. They also taught my family about the internet and trafficking, which helped us understand each other and stay safe together.
The Freedom Story gave me so much power. I used to be really shy and scared to speak up. But the training made me brave.
The best part is that I grew from being someone who just receives help to someone who gives help. I even got to plan a Children’s Day party and teach the little kids in my village about trafficking and online safety! It made me so proud and happy.
I learned that trafficking isn’t just one thing. It’s also forcing people to work, making them beg, or tricking them with fake jobs. It still happens a lot today. But now I know their tricks. I know not to believe jobs that sound too good to be true and to be super careful online.
The skills I learned will stay with me forever. I have big dreams now, and I am so thankful that The Freedom Story helped me make them come true.”
What a Scholarship Actually Does
Nuan’s story shows the ripple effect of our scholarship program. When we give one child the tools and resources they need to stay safe and thrive, they can pass protection on to their peers, families, and communities.
A Freedom Chapter scholarship covers:
- School fees and necessities like transportation, uniforms, and supplies.
- Mentorship and home visits that strengthen the entire family through programs such as positive parenting workshops and financial management training.
- Trafficking prevention training that develops students into advocates who train peers and community members to stay safe from trafficking threats.
Keeping a child safe from trafficking takes a village. For Nuan’s family, that meant helping them build sustainable income sources by teaching them agricultural skills and financial management. For her younger siblings, it meant having an older sister who could teach them about online threats and be an example of how to help others and stay safe.

The Threat Is Still Real
Nuan now knows the warning signs of trafficking. But hundreds of thousands of children in her region do not.
Thailand remains a source, transit, and destination country for trafficking. More than 1.4 million children aged 5-14 are already working, despite the legal working age being 15.
Traffickers don’t always look threatening. They often look like an opportunity: a job offer in the city, a recruiter promising to lift your family out of poverty, a social media connection that turns controlling.
Education is the most effective way to prevent child trafficking. A child who stays in school is harder to deceive, more connected to her community, and more likely to recognize and report exploitation.
At The Freedom Story, our scholarship students learn how to reduce their risk of trafficking, spot and report danger, and train others to recognize it.
