On Independence and Liberty

How was your 4th of July celebration? Did you enjoy BBQs, parades, and fireworks with family and friends to honor American Independence? Were there any more somber moments to reflect on our history and what freedom means for our country, or for our people?

Let us reflect on two quotes from former American Presidents in honor of our Independence:

“Liberty has never come from the government. Liberty has always come from the subjects of it. The history of liberty is a history of resistance.”
–Woodrow Wilson

“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.”
–Ronald Reagan

Liberty is not a preserved state. It is a process that requires work towards greater liberation for ourselves and for our neighbors.

In honor of American Independence, can we do more to encourage greater liberation? Here are some ways to help:

  • Learn more. Read more and expose yourself to more of the thoughts and perspectives of those still fighting for inclusion, respect, and to be productive contributors to our nation and global society.
  • Donate to organizations and other forms of collective action to help those who are enslaved, used and abused, or otherwise oppressed.
  • Volunteer and perform acts of service. Do you have a skill or knowledge set? How can you use that in service of others who might need it?

Let us love our country and take pride in it such that we demand it upholds its greatest ideals, as One Nation, Under God, with Liberty and Justice for all.
