Pik Thai, is a 16-year-old scholarship student whose strength and perseverance have been tested time and again. Pik Thai lives with her father in the heart of Chiang Rai City, where he works long hours as a laborer at a rice shop, earning a modest income of $10 a day to support the family and save for Pik Thai’s education.
On the night of September 10, 2024, heavy rains caused the Kok River to overflow, flooding the area around their home. The water rose so rapidly that they couldn’t move their belongings to safety. By morning, their washing machine, beds, furniture, cooking utensils, and even essential personal items had been swept away or severely damaged. The flood also cut off running water, making daily life even harder.
During the flood, Pik Thai stayed with her mother and two younger sisters while her father stayed at his workplace. Both her parents lost income during this period—her mother, who works as a school cook, couldn’t work due to school closures, and her father’s workplace was also affected, causing it to close temporarily. The family, already struggling on a tight budget, now faced the loss of essential belongings and further financial strain.
We know that financial shocks and strains can cause children to drop out of school, increasing their risk of trafficking. So, we acted quickly to ensure she had the support she needed.
We stepped in to support Pik Thai and her family during this time of crisis. Her mentor reached out with emotional support and provided basic necessities, including school uniforms to help the family through the flood’s aftermath. As the waters receded, The Freedom Story staff offered assistance in replacing what was lost, ensuring that Pik Thai’s education could continue without further disruption. With the encouragement and resources provided by The Freedom Story, Pik Thai and her family are beginning to rebuild their lives.
Reflecting on her experience, Pik Thai shared, “I was worried about my textbooks and being able to continue my studies, but I know that natural disasters like this are beyond our control.” Despite the hardship, Pik Thai’s outlook remains positive, and her commitment to her education is stronger than ever.
