2026 Graduates Create Cycles of Freedom and Hope

May 28, 2026

Across all of Thailand, only 50 percent of students finish high school. In rural areas like Northern Thailand, that number drops to 42 percent. But for many of our students’ peers growing up in the nation’s poorest communities,  the chances drop significantly to 23%.

Breaking Cycles Through Graduation

Since 2008, we’ve been interrupting these cycles of limited choice and opportunity through locally led prevention that educates children, strengthens families, and builds safer communities. So far, we’ve helped more than 1,000 children stay in school and build futures marked by opportunity instead of exploitation.

Our students, the most at-risk in the region, have a 90 percent high school graduation rate. At The Freedom Story, we believe that investing in children’s potential is the way to build a freer, safer, and more hopeful world for all.

Cat, our first scholarship student, put it this way at our 2026 graduation ceremony.

“The world may not see your value, but you should see your value. I believe we’ll see each of you encourage the next generation.”

When we first met Cat, a fourth-grader, her mom said it would be a miracle if Cat made it to ninth grade. Her mom was the sole supporter and was already struggling to pay for transportation and school supplies. Her hopes for Cat were to get her to ninth grade so she could read and write and then work.

But when The Freedom Story stepped in, everything began to change. Now, Cat is an English teacher pursuing her master’s degree in English education.

In March 2026, she addressed 61 new graduates (including elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as vocational school and university students) to show them that they, too, can achieve their dreams. It was a full-circle moment and a testament to the power of prevention. Together, we’re replacing cycles of exploitation with new patterns of freedom and hope.

Meet Two of Our 2026 Graduates

“I Promise To Give Back”

Thanks to the generosity of people like you, in 2025, we welcomed a new cohort of 25 students into The Freedom Chapter. These students were screened through our risk assessment that measures vulnerability through seven key factors, including poverty, home life stability, and family history of trafficking and abuse.

This spring, Prem* became the first high school graduate from the Sunflower Freedom Chapter, our newest group of scholarship students.

Prem is paving the way for this new group of students to dream bigger and believe that they can accomplish more than they can even imagine. This is especially remarkable, given that 96 percent of their parents did not finish middle school. He graduated from high school along with 15 other scholarship students.

We are honored to share this letter that Prem wrote to thank The Freedom Story’s community of staff and donors for helping him reach this milestone:

I am very happy about my graduation and proud of myself for reaching this point. This is because I have received help from all of you who always support me and give me advice.

Throughout this time, I have gained so much knowledge, experience, and many life lessons. These things could never have happened without all of you being behind my success today, whether it is my teachers, parents, friends, or all the sponsors.

I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for every opportunity, all the advice, and all the encouragement you have always given me. These things are very valuable to me, and they will be the motivation that helps me move forward steadily in the future.

Finally, I promise to use the knowledge and experience I have gained to improve myself and do good things to give back to society. Thank you for supporting me.

With love and gratitude,

Prem

“I Learned How To Protect Myself”

Five years ago, Misu* described herself as having “no self-confidence” and being “very afraid of people.” Today, she’s the one welcoming shy students into our program, quickly taking them under her wing as a mentor and going out with The Freedom Story staff to help others learn how to stay safe from exploitation.

Her transformation reflects the power of prevention. When we intervene before harm occurs, we have the power to rewrite children’s stories so they echo with hope, possibility, and freedom for others. The Freedom Story helped Misu stay safe and build a future of possibility by helping her navigate her citizenship application, gain stability at home through mentoring her mom and providing relief care when floods destroyed their home, and become a community leader who can protect others.

This fall, she’ll start university studying multimedia technology and animation. With her, she’ll bring the trafficking prevention training, leadership skills, and confidence she built as a scholarship student with The Freedom Story. Here, she reflects on her final year of high school with The Freedom Story.

Now that I have graduated from Grade 12, I feel very happy and overwhelmed with joy. Even though it might not seem like a big deal to many people, for me it is a huge success.

Since I have been [with The Freedom Story], I have never felt uncomfortable or unloved, not even a little bit. I feel lucky and thankful all the time when I think about the many opportunities I have had.

For example, on the topic of human trafficking, I became more aware of dangers. Now, I feel more confident helping or guiding people in risky situations so they can get help in time. I also feel like I can share this knowledge with my friends and others around me.

When we talked about online dangers, I learned how to protect myself. I now understand how not to become a victim or, unknowingly, hurt others online.

I know how to stay safe from things like romance scams or grooming. There was even a time when someone close to my mom asked to borrow my bank account, but I remembered what I’d learned and didn’t fall for it.

I used to be incredibly shy, but now I’m a leader who goes out with the Freedom Story staff to share the knowledge I’ve learned with younger students and friends.

I believe that, with all the support I’ve received, I will have a better life, be able to take care of myself, and contribute to others. I feel so grateful and deeply touched. May the opportunities you have given me return to you.

Thank you again,

Misu

When you see the value in students like Prem and Misu and decide to take action, you build a generation of leaders who will continue to encourage and protect others long after they graduate from high school. Trafficking prevention through scholarships and mentorship results in more than a diploma and safety; it transforms cycles of vulnerability and exploitation into cycles of freedom and hope.

Join The Freedom Chapter today to support students like Prem and Misu. When you become a monthly donor, you give students the consistent support they need to stay safe and build freer futures for generations to come.
